As of January 24, 2026, Delta has implemented schedule adjustments due to Winter Storm Fern. Additional cancellations have been made for flights to and from Atlanta and along the East Coast, including Delta hubs in Boston and New York City. The storm is expected to bring ice accumulation to Atlanta on Sunday, January 25, and significant snowfall to the Northeast beginning that afternoon.
But here's where it gets controversial... Delta has implemented Winter Storm waivers, effective through Monday, January 26. These waivers provide customers with the flexibility to adjust their travel plans without incurring additional costs. This move has sparked debate among some travelers who question the effectiveness of such waivers and whether they truly address the challenges posed by severe weather.
Delta is committed to providing advanced notice of flight changes and has implemented several proactive measures to minimize disruptions and aid in recovery efforts. These include:
- Enacting flight cancellations well in advance to give customers more time and flexibility.
- Adjusting staffing levels by deploying additional reserve pilots and flight attendants, as well as relocating experts from cold weather hubs to support deicing and baggage teams at Southern airports.
- Strategically placing aircraft out of frozen precipitation areas to facilitate faster recovery once conditions improve.
And this is the part most people miss... Delta has outlined clear guidelines for customers whose flights are significantly delayed or canceled. Delta automatically rebooks customers to the next available itinerary, and customers can make further changes through the Delta app or Delta.com. If a customer experiences a cancellation and is not automatically rebooked, they should promptly contact Delta at the airport or through the Reservations team to explore alternative flight options.
For U.S. domestic itineraries, customers who experience a flight delay of three hours or more and choose not to fly are entitled to a full refund for the unflown portion of their ticket, including any ancillary fees or checked baggage charges. The same refund policy applies to international itineraries with a delay of six hours or more.
If a flight is canceled and the customer chooses not to fly on the rebooked itinerary, Delta will initiate a full refund to the original form of payment after a 24-hour waiting period. Additionally, per Department of Transportation regulations, Delta will automatically refund the unflown portion of the ticket if it is unable to rebook the trip and has not heard from the customer regarding alternative arrangements.
