Bold statement first: a Wellington stabbing left a young man fighting for his life, underscoring how quickly danger can erupt in everyday spaces. But here’s where it gets controversial: the incident occurred in a busy carpark early on a Sunday with a large crowd nearby, raising questions about how such violence can go unseen and what community safety measures are most effective.
A young man was seriously injured after being stabbed multiple times in the back and arm in Wellington. Police were dispatched to a carpark located between Wakefield Street and Tory Street in Te Aro at approximately 4:10 a.m. on Sunday.
A police spokesperson described the victim as having sustained multiple stab wounds to the arm and back. He was transported to hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, where he remains in a stable condition.
Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch emphasized the gravity of the injuries, noting the victim was fortunate to survive. “The victim sustained multiple wounds in his back, any of which could have been fatal. This could have very easily been a homicide investigation.”
Authorities are pursuing strong lines of inquiry to identify those responsible. Leitch added that investigators are aware of a significant number of people in the vicinity at the time of the incident and are urging witnesses and anyone with video footage to come forward.
