Hold on to your hats, horror fans, because Uwe Boll is back in the director's chair, and this time, he's taking another shot at Alone in the Dark! Yes, you read that right. The German director, known for his... unique takes on video game adaptations, is rebooting the franchise. His production company, Event Films, has secured the film rights from THQ Nordic, the publisher of the popular survival horror game series. The original games, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, follow private detective Edward Carnby as he battles the undead. The series has spawned seven games and sold millions of copies globally.
Boll previously adapted Alone in the Dark into a feature film back in 2005, starring Christian Slater and Tara Reid. While the film was heavily criticized at the time, it has surprisingly gained a cult following over the years.
For this reboot, Boll intends to stick closer to the source material, specifically the story of the latest 2024 game release. He stated that the team will "capture the spirit and the era of the original games and follow the story of the new game," and they are eager to cast a new Edward Carnby.
But here's where it gets interesting: Boll and his production partner, Michael Roesch, are also exploring the possibility of turning the franchise into a TV series.
Boll's name has become synonymous with video game adaptations, particularly in the early 2000s. He's directed films based on games like House of the Dead (2003), Bloodrayne (2005), Far Cry (2008), and In the Name of the King (2007), which starred Jason Statham.
And this is the part most people miss: Boll has a reputation for engaging with his critics in a very... hands-on way. He famously challenged online detractors to boxing matches, which he often won.
Currently, Boll and Roesch are also working on Return to Zombie Island, a sequel to House of the Dead, picking up with the original characters 23 years later, with the original cast returning.
They point to the success of recent video game adaptations like The Minecraft Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog films as evidence of a renewed market interest. Furthermore, FX has announced a Far Cry TV series, and Paul W.S. Anderson, the director of Resident Evil, is slated to direct a The House of the Dead reboot.
The ever-busy Boll is also in post-production on two sequels to his 2024 cop thriller, First Shift, which was a surprise hit on Paramount+, and has wrapped on his upcoming action thriller, Citizen Vigilante, starring Armie Hammer.
What do you think about Boll's return to Alone in the Dark? Are you excited, skeptical, or somewhere in between? Do you think he'll deliver a faithful adaptation this time around? Share your thoughts in the comments!
