The University of Wollongong (UOW) is taking a bold step towards transparency, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu leading the charge. In a recent interview, Professor Lu emphasized the importance of embedding values throughout the university, starting from the top. This move comes as a response to the criticism UOW has faced regarding poor transparency in executive decision-making, especially during a period of restructuring, cuts, and job losses.
The initiative, named "Values in Action," aims to guide the university's operations and those of its staff members. One of the core values is transparency, which will be applied to executive decision-making as much as it is across the university. Professor Lu believes that this shift will help rebuild trust and foster a culture of integrity.
The values listed include honesty, transparency, authenticity, and integrity. These principles are particularly significant given the historical context of UOW's struggles with transparency. Professor Lu acknowledges that the past decisions have led to instability and difficult times, but he is committed to turning this around.
"Absolutely, that's my commitment," Professor Lu stated when asked about the prospect of greater transparency in executive decision-making. He believes that leadership should set the tone for this change, emphasizing that the values initiative applies to all levels of the organization, including governance.
The values project, according to Professor Lu, will only be meaningful if it is put into practice. He stresses that the leadership must lead by example, embodying the values first and foremost. This approach will ensure that the values become habits and eventually a culture within the university.
In a separate development, Professor Lu and other UOW leaders were in Canberra, showcasing the region's capabilities through the Made in Illawarra expo. This event highlights the university's commitment to both local and global communities, aligning with its mission to support students and create new knowledge for the benefit of society.
