Turkey's Spaceport in Somalia: A Strategic Move Amid Global Surveillance

The spaceport, located on Somalia's Indian Ocean coast, is a significant step in Turkey's quest to enhance its satellite launch capabilities and space exploration. Bayraktar unveiled this project at the Take Off İstanbul 2025 conference, emphasizing the strategic importance of Somalia's coastline for safe launch and recovery operations. He highlighted the rarity of such ideal conditions for full-scale spaceflight, making this site a valuable asset.
But here's where it gets controversial: the spaceport's proximity to the equator is a game-changer. Equatorial launch sites, leveraging the Earth's rotation, offer reduced fuel consumption and increased payload capacity, a dream come true for any spacefaring nation. This advantage has not gone unnoticed by major powers, including the U.S., China, and France, who have increased satellite surveillance in the area.
Intelligence Online reports that these countries' reconnaissance satellites have been closely monitoring the region, possibly due to concerns over military applications.
