On December 1st, user Katie Bangert (@katiebanger_) shared her struggle, sarcastically titling her video "Perks of owning a Tesla in the winter part 1." The caption simply asked, "Tesla, what am I supposed to do here?"
The response was surprisingly divided. Some commenters jumped to Tesla's defense, with one bluntly stating, "Some people don’t deserve Teslas." Others offered practical solutions, such as using the app to remotely open the door.
But here's where it gets controversial... Other comments were less forgiving. One pointed out, "A design that needs multiple workarounds to work as well as a normal handle is not a good design."
So, why are these Tesla handles freezing shut? Is this a common problem?
For many Tesla owners, this is a familiar foe. The flush-mounted door handles, designed for aerodynamic efficiency, are prone to trapping snow, ice, or even just cold moisture. This moisture then freezes, preventing the handle from functioning as intended. Think of it like a tiny, icy prison for your door handle mechanism.
Specifically, ice can build up inside the pivot or hinge points, effectively locking the handle in place. This issue has been reported by numerous Tesla owners, especially in colder climates.
But don't despair! There are solutions. Tesla has actually built in several remedies. The most straightforward is the “Unlatch Door” option in the official mobile app, allowing you to remotely pop open the driver's side door.
And this is the part most people miss... If the app isn't an option, or if the freeze is more widespread, Tesla's official documentation suggests warming up the cabin and battery before attempting to open the door. Using the “Defrost Car” feature in the app or scheduling pre-heating can melt ice on handles, windows, and other moving parts.
For manual intervention, some Tesla models allow you to press the front part of the handle to rock it inward, potentially breaking light ice. Then, pressing the rear part should open the door. Once it's moving, cycling the handle a few times can help clear any remaining ice.
