The future of Ruben Amorim at Manchester United hangs in the balance, a situation fueled by tension and uncertainty. Amorim took the reins at United in November 2024. While Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who oversees United’s football policy, initially expressed a commitment to giving Amorim three years to prove himself, there are now whispers of reservations within the club's leadership.
These concerns predate Amorim's recent public outburst following a 1-1 draw against Leeds. He emphatically stated he is the manager, not just a coach, and hinted at his potential departure when his contract expires in 18 months. This bold declaration has only intensified the speculation.
Further fueling the fire, reports emerged in mid-December suggesting a reluctance to sell Kobbie Mainoo, a player who hasn't been favored by Amorim. The 20-year-old midfielder, currently sidelined with an injury, is yet to start in the Premier League this season. However, the club's hierarchy believes Mainoo could still prove his worth to Amorim or a future head coach.
Adding to the intrigue, Amorim declined to clarify previous comments made on Christmas Eve. He had stated: "I have the feeling that if we have to play a perfect 3-4-3 we need to spend a lot of money and need time. I’m starting to understand that is not going to happen.” When asked if this was due to budget changes or a conversation with Wilcox, Amorim simply responded, "I don’t want to talk about that… You are very smart."
Amorim's temperament is reportedly a concern within the club, making his position precarious. Despite stating he wouldn't resign after the Leeds match, his future remains uncertain. With Berrada's appointment, Wilcox is believed to have the upper hand in terms of support from the chief executive.
Amorim further escalated the situation during an impassioned press conference at Elland Road. He pointedly urged the scouting department and sporting director to "do their job." He stated, "I came here to be the manager of Manchester United – not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear. I know my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, [José] Mourinho or [Antonio] Conte but I’m the manager. It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit, I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”
When questioned about transfer policy, he added, “Every department, the scouting department, the sporting director, needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.” He concluded by saying, “If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything, we need to change the club,” before abruptly ending the conference.
It's worth noting that Amorim's official title is, in fact, head coach. Furthermore, reports suggest that United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, has also questioned his tactics.
