A hospital ward on the Isle of Man is facing a delay in its reopening due to safety concerns arising from environmental assessments, according to Manx Care.
The Martin Ward at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital was originally scheduled to reopen after undergoing a four-week refurbishment aimed at addressing a pest control issue discovered in part of the building's roof back in October. However, recent tests have revealed unexpected problems regarding the air and overall environmental quality within the ward.
As a result, the area will remain closed for at least another week while efforts are made to clean and retest the environment. Manx Care has emphasized that, without full confidence in the latest test results, it would be inappropriate to allow the ward to reopen, particularly because some patients may be more susceptible to potential environmental hazards.
A representative from Manx Care stated, "The hospital team is committed to ensuring that all building systems are operating correctly, and we will conduct new checks promptly, adhering to the established standards."
To accommodate the situation, patients with clinical appointments at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital have already been contacted directly regarding the delays in reopening.
This postponement follows the previous closure of the ward in October, during which time patients were transferred to Ward 19 at Noble's Hospital in Braddan. The necessary refurbishment work to address the pest infestation, along with other upgrades at the facility, has led to services being relocated to Noble's Hospital, resulting in the temporary closure of the minor injuries unit (MIU) in Ramsey.
Additionally, a shuttle bus service has been introduced to transport patients who would typically visit the MIU to the main hospital's emergency department, ensuring continued access to care.
