Armstrong, at just 25 years old, is taking a bold stand as the first athlete to publicly commit to the Enhanced Games with a clean slate. Yes, you heard that right - no performance-enhancing drugs for this champion. He made his intentions crystal clear on Instagram, leaving no room for doubt.
But here's where it gets controversial... Armstrong's decision to join the Enhanced Games is a financial lifeline. You see, he's been open about the struggles of making ends meet as a professional swimmer, and last year, retirement was on the cards. In a revealing podcast interview, he shared the depths of his financial woes.
So, why the Enhanced Games? Well, it's a chance for Armstrong to keep his head above water financially while training for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. With a $1 million prize for breaking the world record in the 50 freestyle and a $500,000 prize purse for each event, it's a tempting offer. As Armstrong put it, "If I don't join Enhanced, I lose everything. If I do, I have a chance." A risky move, but one that could pay off.
However, there's a catch. World Aquatics, the international governing body, has a bylaw (bylaw 10) that bans participants in Enhanced Games competitions from their events. Talk about a tough choice! The Enhanced Games even took World Aquatics to court, along with USA Swimming and the World Anti-Doping Agency, claiming the bylaw was anticompetitive. But a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, leaving Armstrong's future unclear.
And this is the part most people miss... Armstrong's signing with the Enhanced Games could be a game-changer. It gives the Enhanced Games a reason to sue World Aquatics and USA Swimming again, and with Armstrong's star power, it could be a compelling case. He's spoken to World Aquatics officials, but no clear answers have been given on his eligibility.
"Nobody knows what's going to happen, and I won't get an answer by waiting," Armstrong said. A bold statement indeed.
USA Swimming's National Team Director, Greg Meehan, expressed disappointment in Armstrong's decision, calling it "unprecedented." Meehan sent an email to the National Team, acknowledging the uncertainty and promising to keep them updated.
Armstrong's last competition was at the U.S. Open in December, where he placed 14th in the men's 50 free final. He didn't compete at the U.S. National Championships in June but raced at the U.S. Pro Championships in August, finishing as runner-up in the 50 free.
A former Ohio State Buckeye, Armstrong's career has been nothing short of remarkable. He qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the men's 100 back in 2021, winning gold in Tokyo as a prelim member of the men's 4x100 medley relay. Since then, he's added five medals at the 2022 World Championships and three more at the 2023 edition in Fukuoka, including an individual gold in the 50 back. An impressive resume, to say the least.
