Mathieu Darche's Journey: From Tampa Bay to the Islanders | NHL Executive's Rise (2026)

Mathieu Darche's journey back to Tampa Bay serves as a powerful reminder of his aspirations with the Islanders. While he may not be directly involved in the game or recognized on the streets, there's an undeniable sense of homecoming.

Darche's association with the Lightning as an assistant general manager for six seasons, witnessing their Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021, has shaped his current role with the Islanders. His brother, J.P., who is also a former athlete, shares insights into Mathieu's career path and the family's hopes for future championships.

"Mathieu's decision to pursue his hockey dream was a no-brainer. He had a successful playing career spanning over a decade, and his executive role has brought even more success. It's a testament to his dedication and hard work," J.P. Darche explained.

The Islanders' recent wins against Tampa Bay and Colorado have boosted their morale, and Darche refers to their upcoming schedule as a challenging "gauntlet." The team's performance against the Lightning last Tuesday earned Darche bragging rights, but the competition continues.

J.P. Darche, now a team doctor for the Kansas City Chiefs, recalls his brother's journey from Montreal to Tampa Bay. "It was a tough decision for Mathieu, leaving his hometown and family for an opportunity in Tampa. But he took the leap, and it paid off. We're incredibly proud of him," he said.

Both brothers share a passion for hockey and have championship rings to show for it. J.P. won three with the Chiefs, and they're eager for the Islanders to bring home the next one.

"The Islanders have what it takes to win the Cup. Growing up, my earliest hockey memories are of the Islanders' Stanley Cup victories in the '80s. I have no doubt they can do it again," J.P. Darche added.

In terms of team updates, Jean-Gabriel Pageau is expected to be a full participant in Sunday's game against the Panthers, while Jonathan Drouin remains in New York for treatment. The Islanders have also made a switch in their travel arrangements, now flying with Private Jet Solutions after New Pacific Airlines ceased operations.

As the Islanders continue their journey, Darche's homecoming serves as a reminder of the team's potential and the dreams they strive to achieve.
