Marburg virus: A Growing Concern in Ethiopia
The recent outbreak of the Marburg virus in Southern Ethiopia has raised concerns among health authorities. With at least nine confirmed cases, this 'Ebola cousin' is proving to be highly contagious, and efforts to contain it are underway. The World Health Organization (WHO) is actively supporting Ethiopia in managing the outbreak and treating infected individuals, while also addressing the potential for cross-border spread.
But what exactly is the Marburg virus? It's a severe fever-causing illness that can spread from person to person through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood, saliva, or urine. Even touching contaminated surfaces can transmit the virus. Marburg shares a close genetic link with the Ebola virus family, which was first discovered in 1967 after lab workers in Germany and Serbia fell ill.
The symptoms of Marburg virus infection are alarming. Initial signs include fever, headache, chills, and muscle aches. More severe symptoms can include chest pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In extreme cases, patients may experience severe blood loss and multi-organ failure. A distinctive non-itchy rash appears 2-7 days after the onset of symptoms, according to the WHO. Tragically, deaths typically occur 8-9 days after the virus takes hold, preceded by intense blood loss and shock. The Marburg virus has a high fatality rate of approximately 50%.
This isn't the first time Marburg has caused an outbreak. It has previously been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The virus is believed to have originated from bats and can reemerge even after an outbreak has been contained. As of now, there are no vaccines or antiviral treatments available to combat Marburg symptoms.
