A significant majority of Hong Kong's youngest residents are still unprotected against the flu—over 86% of infants and toddlers have not received their vaccinations. This alarming statistic comes from a respected expert in respiratory illnesses who highlights both the current situation and the potential risks ahead. As winter approaches, health officials warn that a surge in flu cases could be imminent, especially after more than 20 severe influenza incidents have been reported among children, including two fatalities.
Professor David Hui Shu-cheong, a specialist in respiratory medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, shared these insights on Sunday. He explained that the summer flu wave is gradually declining, and experts anticipate it will settle down by late November or early December. However, the arrival of the colder months, typically from January to March, often marks the start of another flu peak, which could lead to increased hospitalizations and health concerns.
Hui also pointed out that this year, approximately 1.33 million people in Hong Kong have been vaccinated against influenza, reflecting a modest increase of about 3.9% compared to the same period last year. Despite this uptick, he emphasized that only around 14% of children aged six months to two years—the age group most vulnerable to severe flu complications—have received their shots so far. This low vaccination rate is insufficient to establish herd immunity, the collective protection that occurs when a significant portion of the population is immunized.
Furthermore, Hui revealed that roughly 80% of the population remains unvaccinated against the flu. This widespread gap in immunization coverage leaves many at risk, especially during the peak winter months when the virus tends to circulate more aggressively.
