Diana Shnaider vs Katerina Siniakova Full Match Highlights | Adelaide International 2026 (2026)

Shnaider's Resilience Shines in Adelaide, Despite a Year of Coaching Changes and Ranking Slips

'She's a very unexpected player, she can come into the net, she definitely can surprise you.' Diana Shnaider's determination to keep her composure against Katerina Siniakova at the Adelaide International is a testament to her resilience. For the second year in a row, Shnaider has faced and overcome the Czech player, securing her spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 victory.

Last year, Shnaider was ranked No. 13 and seemed poised for a Top 10 breakthrough. However, amidst a revolving door of coaches, including Igor Andreev, Dinara Safina, and Carlos Martinez, her 2025 season took a turn. She ended up with a 28-25 record, finishing outside the Top 20 again.

Despite these setbacks, Shnaider's recent partnership with Sascha Bajin, Serena Williams's former hitting partner, has stabilized her team. She's been working on her game and enjoying the process, as evidenced by her post-match comments after defeating Siniakova.

'I do enjoy working together,' Shnaider said. 'We're having a lot of fun, we're working on a lot of stuff, I'm learning a lot for myself. So far it's working pretty well. I enjoy what I've seen on the court -- the way I'm playing, the way I'm keeping my composure, having tight matches against tough opponents.'

Shnaider's ability to stay calm under pressure was crucial against Siniakova, who turned the second set with brilliant passes and volleys. In the deciding set, Shnaider focused on her serve and took her chances on return, ultimately capturing the only break of the set at 5-5.

'She can play very well,' Shnaider said of Siniakova. 'Sometimes too well, I would say! She's a very unexpected player, she can come into the net, she definitely can surprise you.'

Shnaider's next challenge is No. 6 seed Emma Navarro, who held off a late comeback attempt by qualifier Yulia Putintseva. Shnaider holds a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Navarro, though they have not played since 2024.

Despite her ranking slide, Shnaider has proven her capability to compete with top players. However, converting close matches into wins has been a challenge. Since the start of 2025, she has gone 0-5 against Top 10 opposition, with four of those losses coming in three sets.

'It's a sweet-bitter feeling afterwards because it was so close,' Shnaider said of her recent match against Madison Keys. 'You definitely think you should have done something different, something more -- but at the end of the day, it was an amazing match. I was very proud of the effort I put there. I feel like it was very physical for both of us. I'm happy I pushed Maddy to her limits, pushed myself to the limits and checked my ability at the start of the season.'

As Shnaider continues her journey in Adelaide, her resilience and determination to stay calm under pressure will be key to her success against top-ranked opponents.
