Aussie Tennis Star's Emotional Home Debut: 'I Almost Started Crying'
Daria Kasatkina, a former world No.8 tennis player, made her highly anticipated debut at the Australian Open, representing her new homeland. The 28-year-old's journey to this point has been emotional and challenging, as she switched her allegiance from Russia due to her opposition to the Ukraine invasion and her public identity as a gay woman.
Kasatkina's first match in Australia was a bittersweet experience. She faced fellow ex-Russian Anastasia Potapova in Brisbane, and despite the loss, the Aussie fan support was a highlight. Kasatkina's serve let her down with 16 double faults, but the energy of the crowd almost brought tears to her eyes.
"Stepping onto the court and hearing the cheer, I almost started crying but I was able to hold it," she said. "I wanted to win so much and feel this extra energy. I've been through a tough year, but I'm fine now."
The stress of her life change caused Kasatkina to end her 2025 season early, and her ranking fell out of the top 32, meaning she'll miss being seeded at the Australian Open. However, her determination to represent Australia and pay back the country's support is unwavering.
"I want to pay back to the country," she emphasized. "I'm getting to know the Australian mentality; the people here support because they want to, not because they expect you to win slams. It's just the way I am."
Despite the challenges, the Aussies had some good news with Ajla Tomljanovic recording a strong win over Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot. Tomljanovic, a former world No.32, has been battling mental and physical demons since a knee injury in late 2022.
"I feel like there are certain mental battles that people don't see, where I struggled to enjoy my tennis," she said post-match. "But I had to dig deep to find my joy again. I'm grateful to still be here."
Tomljanovic's victory earned her a second-round clash with world No.19 and former French Open finalist Karolina Muchova.
On the men's side, Aussies James Duckworth, Dane Sweeny, and Rinky Hijikata all qualified for the main draw, with Hijikata securing his spot after top seed Matteo Arnaldi withdrew. However, local hope Aleksandar Vukic was quickly dispatched by Frances Tiafoe in the tournament proper.
This emotional and challenging journey for Daria Kasatkina highlights the power of sports to bring people together and inspire change. As she continues her tennis career, her story will undoubtedly inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
