Childhood Vaccines: Confidence, Safety, and Political Divide (2026)

Amidst a backdrop of growing political polarization, a recent survey by the Pew Research Center reveals a complex landscape of attitudes towards childhood vaccines and the COVID-19 vaccine. While a majority of adults express confidence in the effectiveness of childhood vaccines, their trust in safety and policy is deeply influenced by political affiliation, and the COVID-19 vaccine remains a contentious issue.

Childhood Vaccines: A Divide in Confidence

The survey, conducted among over 5,100 adults, found that 63% of respondents exhibit high confidence in the effectiveness of routine childhood vaccines. However, this confidence wanes when it comes to safety and scheduling. Only 53% believe these vaccines have undergone sufficient safety testing, and 51% trust the recommended vaccine schedules. This lack of confidence is particularly pronounced among Republicans, with nearly half expressing low confidence in vaccine safety measures.

Despite these reservations, both Democrats (92%) and Republicans (78%) agree that the benefits of the MMR vaccine outweigh the risks. Yet, Republican support for MMR vaccine school requirements has significantly decreased, falling from 79% in 2019 to 52% currently, mirroring a broader public trend from 82% to 69% support.

Political Influence on Vaccine Policy

The survey highlights a stark political divide in the belief that medical scientists should play a major role in childhood vaccine decisions, with Democrats (85%) far more likely than Republicans (62%) to endorse this view. Republicans, on the other hand, are more inclined to prioritize parental input (71% vs. 46%).

COVID-19 Vaccine: A Majority Opts Out

A separate Pew survey explored Americans' attitudes towards the updated COVID-19 vaccine. Surprisingly, 59% of adults indicate they do not plan to receive the updated vaccine, a figure consistent with 2024 levels. Only 13% had already received the vaccine as of late October, and a mere 26% expressed a desire to get it.

Impact of CDC Guidelines

The survey also examined the impact of recent changes to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) vaccine guidelines. Interestingly, only 44% of adults were aware of these changes, and among those who were, most (63%) stated that the changes had no influence on their decision to get the vaccine. However, the new guidelines have affected trust, with 40% of adults expressing reduced confidence in the Trump administration's other vaccine recommendations, a sentiment strongly divided along party lines.
