Australian Open 2026: Rising Star Learner Tien's Journey with Coach Michael Chang (2026)

Australian Open 2026: Rising Star Learner Tien, Coached by Michael Chang, Eyes Top 100

The 2026 Australian Open is set to feature an intriguing match between rising star Learner Tien and American Mackenzie McDonald. Both players are Asian-American, both call California home, and both have made significant strides in tennis at a young age. Tien, in particular, has been on a remarkable journey.

Last year, Tien, who has Vietnamese heritage, made tennis history by becoming the youngest player to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open since 2003. His impressive performance caught the attention of none other than Michael Chang, a tennis legend and former world No.2. Chang, who won the 1989 French Open at the age of 17, became Tien's coach midway through 2025, marking a significant turning point in the young player's career.

Tien's 2025 season was a breakout year, as he improved his ranking to a remarkable No.26 in the world. He won his first ATP title and dominated the Next Generation ATP Finals, solidifying his status as one of the game's brightest young stars. The left-handed Tien's success is not just about rankings; it's about achieving personal goals. He delivered on his promise to win his first title before turning 20, and his second-round win over Daniil Medvedev, a nearly five-hour match that ended in the early hours, was a significant milestone.

"That match actually got me into the Top 100. I started to feel more and more like I belonged," Tien said, reflecting on his journey. His agent played a crucial role in securing Chang's coaching, and Tien believes the partnership has been a great fit so far.

Chang, despite his retirement in 2003, when Tien wasn't even born, has high hopes for his prot├йg├й. "For me personally... if you look at this past year, Learner's beaten more Top 10 guys than anybody else apart from Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner," Chang noted. "When you've beaten Top 10 players, it gives you confidence."

Chang's belief in Tien's potential is evident in his coaching approach. "I have that belief in him as a person [and] in his game," Chang said. "He's still learning, growing, and improving, but his progress in a full season has been incredible."

The partnership between Tien and Chang began in Hong Kong over a year ago. Their shared experiences and similar mindsets made it a natural fit. "Some aspects (of our relationship and similarities) make it a little easier. We can talk about things in Orange County," Chang explained. "Learner's very cerebral, a thinker on the court, which aligns with my mindset."

Tien's cerebral approach to the game, combined with Chang's strategic insights, has created a refreshing dynamic. "I've always been inclined to over-share about different things, whether technically or strategically," Chang said. "But Learner doesn't have an issue with that. He absorbs and understands things very well, which has been a refreshing change for me as a coach."

As Tien prepares for the Australian Open 2026, he carries the weight of tennis history on his shoulders. With Chang's guidance, he aims to continue his ascent, potentially reaching the Top 100 and beyond. The tennis world eagerly awaits his next move, knowing that this young talent is destined for greatness.
