"For me personally... if you look at this past year, Learner's beaten more Top 10 guys than anybody else apart from Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner," Chang noted. "When you've beaten Top 10 players, it gives you confidence."
Chang's belief in Tien's potential is evident in his coaching approach. "I have that belief in him as a person [and] in his game," Chang said. "He's still learning, growing, and improving, but his progress in a full season has been incredible."
The partnership between Tien and Chang began in Hong Kong over a year ago. Their shared experiences and similar mindsets made it a natural fit. "Some aspects (of our relationship and similarities) make it a little easier. We can talk about things in Orange County," Chang explained. "Learner's very cerebral, a thinker on the court, which aligns with my mindset."
Tien's cerebral approach to the game, combined with Chang's strategic insights, has created a refreshing dynamic. "I've always been inclined to over-share about different things, whether technically or strategically," Chang said. "But Learner doesn't have an issue with that. He absorbs and understands things very well, which has been a refreshing change for me as a coach."
As Tien prepares for the Australian Open 2026, he carries the weight of tennis history on his shoulders. With Chang's guidance, he aims to continue his ascent, potentially reaching the Top 100 and beyond.
